Voronoi 2D Tessellation Screen Door

When Jacob Dorler needed a screen door for his place he recalled his studies of Voronoi diagrams. He began refining the parameters using the Grasshopper plug-in for the 3-D modeling program Rhino. The Voronoi lattice is an irregular tessellation having equal hexagons with point symmetry. It is a structural pattern found in nature and is particularly strong in compressive strength.

Once Jacob was satisfied with the design, with its unique viewing pattern and shadows, he cut two sheets of 1/2″ plywood using a CNC mill. He then sandwiched a screen in between them. Hand finishing took 20 hours followed by staining and the application of three coats of polyurethane.

Jacob will be installing it shortly unless he sells it, $800 if you are interested.
